The Los Angeles Lakers hired one recently retired player to lead their coaching staff. Could they have room for another?
J.J. Redick on Thursday agreed to become head coach of the Lakers. The 15-year pro received quite a hefty sum for someone who’s never had any real coaching experience.
One former Laker, Rajon Rondo, is also reportedly on the Lakers’ radar. According to The Athletic's Shams Charania, Rondo is a "candidate" to join the coaching staff. Lakers Daily reporter Anthony Irwin adds that both LeBron James and Anthony Davis want Rondo back in the Purple and Gold locker room.

There were rumblings last month about the Lakers eyeing Rondo for an assistant coaching role. That still appears to be in play with Redick now at the helm.
Irwin added that the Lakers are also interested in signing Chris Paul, which probably wouldn’t help lure Rondo to coach the team. Rondo and Paul have quite a bit of history with one another.
Rondo played three seasons for the Lakers and was a key cog during their 2020 championship run in the NBA bubble.
Rondo officially announced his retirement in April after a 16-year career. He ended his career with two championship rings, four All-Star nods and three assist titles.
