Vladimir Guerrero Jr. rescinds claim he'd never play for Yankees

It's worth noting that it's possible.

A few years ago, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said that he'd never sign with the New York Yankees. It was a bit more colorful than that, though.

"I like to play in New York, I like to kill the Yankees. I would never sign with the Yankees, not even dead," Guerrero said at the time.

There was a personal beef there between Vlad Jr. that stemmed back to his father's time in MLB, but now we're in 2024 and the Toronto Blue Jays are at the bottom of the AL East looking up at the Yankees — who have the second-best record in the American League.

Guerrero will become an unrestricted free agent in 2026, and with the Blue Jays possibly staring at a rebuilding situation, there's a strong chance they'll decide to move him at the July 30 trade deadline in order to restock their minor league system.

The Yankees, while stacked, could always use a bat like Vlad's, especially with Antony Rizzo out until at least August.

Notably, Guerrero has seemed to change his tune on New York.

"Sometimes one says things. It is not that I am trying to take back what I said about the Yankees," Guerrero told Virus Deportivo (h/t ESPN). "But this is a business. I sat down and spoke with my dad [Vladimir Guerrero Sr.] and my family, and this is a business. And I said I would never again talk about this topic and lots of people have asked me about it."

Toronto would, of course, have to trade Vladdy, but this softened stance would suggest that he knows that there have at least been some whispers about a potential change of scenery

"I'm a player and if a team picks me or if they do something, it's because they need it, obviously, and I'll be happy to help any team," Guerrero explained. "But right now, I'm just focused on helping my team try to get out of this bad streak."

Vladdy Jr. has hit .286 this season with 10 home runs and 36 RBI with an OPS of .796.
