Watch: Portugal win in penalties, avoid crashing out of Euro 2024

A long and scoreless 120 minutes was not enough to decide a winner between Portugal and Slovenia in the Euro Tournament Round of 16. But it only took three successful penalties for Cristiano Ronaldo and company to escape with the victory in a shootout.

Despite missing a controversial spot kick in the 105th minute during extra time, which would have put Portugal up 1-0 and potentially avoided the shootout altogether, Ronaldo got his revenge on Slovenian goalkeeper Jan Orbak to start.

Slovenia would heartbreakingly have all three of their penalty attempts saved by Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa, allowing teammates Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva to finish off the match with their successful kicks.

But Slovenia had earlier chances to potentially pull off the upset. Deep into extra time, striker Benjamin Sesko had a clear breakaway after defender Pepe slipped and misplayed the ball directly to him but ultimately had Sesko's shot saved by Costa.

Portugal now advance to play France in the quarterfinals which are set for July 5-6.
