The Arizona Diamondbacks entered the All-Star break with a 10-5 record over their final 15 games, overcoming a challenging stretch that included series against three different postseason teams.
For the first time since early April, they crossed the .500 mark. While the confidence and momentum from such a strong finish are crucial, the implications for the trade deadline are equally significant.
Had the Diamondbacks entered the break on a losing skid, placing them several games below .500, the front office might have been less inclined to make significant acquisitions at the deadline. Last year, for instance, as the Diamondbacks entered late July firmly in the NL Wild Card race for the first time since 2017, Arizona’s front office made several key acquisitions. They picked up closer Paul Sewald, who became a postseason hero, Tommy Pham, who had a pair of four-hit games in October, and Jace Peterson from the Athletics.
Although the D-backs have not been linked to major names like the Marlins’ Jazz Chisholm Jr. or the White Sox’s Luis Robert Jr., manager Torey Lovullo made his stance clear during an appearance on the Burns & Gambo show.
Admitting that he is unsure about the current front office stance, Lovullo noted, “I’m always gonna say be a buyer.”

On July 3rd, speaking on Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke, GM Mike Hazen hinted at his mindset. Hazen mentioned that the Diamondbacks would need to be within striking distance for the front office to be aggressive. As of July 18th, things are trending that way. With 10 games remaining before the deadline, the D-backs are just one game out of a National League Wild Card spot. Notably, the Diamondbacks have a relatively easy schedule over the next couple of weeks, with the Royals as the only playoff team on the schedule until August.
Hazen stated that if the Diamondbacks are in the race, he is ready to buy, noting, “My intention here is to buy. I want to buy, I want to push further in.”
The Diamondbacks, who hold one of the worst team ERAs in baseball, are expected to receive some reinforcements in August, with Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez returning.
One key factor that could determine the Diamondbacks’ actions at the deadline is how Jordan Montgomery performs when he returns at the end of July. Montgomery is off to the worst season of his career, with an ERA over 6.00.
According to ESPN’s Buster Olney, “From what I understand, their focus is on adding a left-handed reliever.”
