New York Giants fans are understandably excited that promising rookie Jaxson Dart has replaced struggling veteran Russell Wilson as the 0-3 club's starting quarterback ahead of this coming Sunday's home game against the 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers.
However, it seems that decision isn't stopping at least one upset Giants supporter from resuming what's become a familiar protest.
For a piece published Thursday, High Exposure Aerial Advertising owner Dave Dempsey told Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com that "a banner with a message aimed at the team’s ineptitude" will fly over MetLife Stadium for the Giants' home game versus the Chargers. That customer doesn't want the banner's message revealed ahead of time, but Dempsey said the statement "is in line with last year’s banners that flew over MetLife Stadium’s parking lots before back-to-back December games."
Specifically, one banner from last season asked Giants co-owner John Mara to "please fix this dumpster fire." A different message warned Mara that "we won't stop until you fire everyone."
Despite such pleas, Mara chose to retain both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen. This past spring, it was reported that Mara and fellow co-owner Steve Tisch bought into the quarterback plan proposed by Daboll and Schoen that ideally would "immediately produce better results while simultaneously addressing their 'No. 1 issue' of finding a quarterback of the future."
Thus far, that plan has flopped badly. The previously mentioned Wilson was benched after he played poorly in two of three defeats, the most recent of which was a 22-9 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs that featured Wilson shockingly throwing the ball out of the end zone on a fourth-down play in the fourth quarter.
The Giants have now gone 9-28 under the Daboll and Schoen regime since New York's divisional-round playoff loss to the rival Philadelphia Eagles in January 2023. Meanwhile, former Giants running back Saquon Barkley helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LIX this past February after Schoen let Barkley reach free agency in March 2024.
According to Dempsey, the person responsible for the Week 4 banner had nothing to do with this past December's messages. Perhaps Dart will play well enough against the Chargers to keep additional banners from flying over MetLife Stadium throughout the fall.
