The New York Mets and San Diego Padres could give each other a big hand right now.
The Mets lost two key stars in Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz, and the Friars need to shed some money off their payroll.
According to a report by Ken Rosenthal, Dennis Lin and Will Sammon of The Athletic, the teams are in talks to get a deal done. The Mets reportedly want to acquire Nick Pivetta, but they're also interested in several other players.
"The Padres’ players in the talks include right-hander Nick Pivetta, outfielder Ramón Laureano and relievers Mason Miller, Adrian Morejon and Jeremiah Estrada," read the report. "San Diego, in turn, is asking the Mets about their young major leaguers and all of their top prospects, both pitchers and position players."
The report also adds that Francisco Lindor, Jake Cronenworth, and Fernando Tatis Jr. haven't been brought up in trade discussions.
The Padres had one of the best bullpens in the game last season, but with Robert Suarez already leaving and a decimated rotation, they may not have many incentives to move on from Pivetta.
That being said, he can opt out of his contract after the season, and he's still owed $51 million, so they may have no choice but to cut ties with him while they still can.
If they can also land high-end prospects, such as Jonah Tong or Nolan McLean, then even better.
The Mets may not be as star-studded as they once were, but they have arguably the best farm system in the majors, so that should help them land virtually every player they covet right now.
