Yankees' quiet offseason could soon ramp up

The New York Yankees offseason has been quiet thus far. That may be about to change.

The Yankees have been linked to pitcher Freddy Peralta and may be the frontrunner for his services. Peralta is not the Yankees only trade target as Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that they are interested in infielder Nico Hoerner and outfielder Luis Robert Jr. 

Heyman noted that the Yankees have kept in contact with the representatives for shortstop Bo Bichette and outfielder Kyle Tucker. Both players are regarded as alternatives to outfielder Cody Bellinger as contract discussions appear to be at an impasse.

Trade market could be key to New York Yankees offseason

Hoerner may have had his best major league season in 2025. He posted a .297/.345/.394 batting line over his 649 plate appearances, hitting seven homers and 29 doubles while stealing 29 bases. Hoerner won his second Gold Glove as he led NL second basemen with seven runs saved.

Robert, meanwhile, has fallen off drastically from his career year in 2023, posting a .223/.288/.372 batting line over his 856 plate appearances between 2024 and 2025, hitting 28 homers and 31 doubles while stealing 56 bases. However, Robert had a strong showing in the second half of 2025, posting a .298/.352/.456 batting line with five homers and three doubles over 125 plate appearances before being lost for the season with a strained left hamstring.

Both players would be a stopgap solution; Hoerner is under team control for 2026 and Robert has a team option for 2027. Both players also come with question marks — Hoerner has primarily been a second baseman, although the Yankees could give him a look at short while Robert needs to prove that his second-half showing was not just a hot streak. 

The Yankees' interest in Hoerner and Robert may depend on Bellinger. If he returns to New York, Robert may no longer be a fit. As spring training approaches, the Yankees cannot afford to wait much longer before working to improve the roster.
