AJ Dybantsa caps wild freshmen scoring spree with BYU record in win over Utah

The freshmen are alright.

On Saturday, BYU forward AJ Dybantsa, the potential No. 1 overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft, was one of three freshmen to drop 40 points, joining Kingston Flemings and Keaton Wagler.

Below, we take a closer look at each.

AJ Dybantsa shows why he's a possible No. 1 pick in 91-78 win over Utah

Dybantsa flashed his pro potential in the 13-point win over the Utes, finishing with a BYU freshman record 43 points on 15-of-24 shooting, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc, and adding six rebounds and three assists.

He was a one-man show, attacking the rim, splitting defenders and sinking long-range shots with ease as Associated Press No. 13 BYU Cougars (17-2, 5-1) bounced back from an 84-71 loss at No. 12 Texas Tech in their previous game.

The Cougars host the No. 1 Arizona Wildcats (20-0, 7-0 in Big 12) on Tuesday in one of the biggest games in Provo in years. Dybantsa (No. 2 in ESPN's 2026 NBA Draft big board) might need a repeat performance for BYU to pull off the upset.

Kingston Flemings' 42 not enough in road loss to Texas Tech

Houston was uncharacteristically poor defensively against Texas Tech in a 90-86 loss, spoiling Fleming's masterful effort. He briefly held the Big 12 freshman scoring record with 42 points, the 6-foot-4 freshman's eighth 20-point game this season.

When Houston's other scoring options went into a funk during the second half, Flemings (No. 6 big board) held firm, scoring 20 of the team's 37 points and making eight of its 13 field goals. The Cougars were painfully close to winning the national title last season but were ultimately undone by their offensive limitations. That's been a common refrain under Kelvin Sampson, but Flemings gives Houston a dynamic scorer it can trust late in games. It just can't afford a similar defensive whiff come March.

Keaton Wagler makes history in road win at No. 4 Purdue

The Illinois guard, ranked No. 25 on ESPN's NBA Draft big board, had the day's biggest scoring output among the sizzling freshmen, finishing an 88-82 victory at Purdue with 46 points, the most in a road win against an AP top 10 team in the poll's history.

Wagler willed the Illini to the win, accounting for over half of the team's points as it erased an 11-point deficit to improve to 8-1 in Big Ten play. Purdue outshot Illinois, 57% to 48%, and had overwhelming advantages in points off turnovers (20-2), fast break points (14-5) and points in the paint (44-14), but it couldn't overcome Wagler's historic performance. He was the best player on the court, and less than halfway through conference play, he's only getting better.
