Eight years ago, the New York Jets took their quarterback of the future with the No. 3 pick — or so they hoped.
Sam Darnold's physical traits were mesmerizing, and even though he was a little raw coming out of college, the USC product looked like a sure thing in a quarterback-studded class.
Things didn't work out as expected, and just when it seemed that Darnold would be out of the league, he took a step back as a backup, bounced around from team to team and patiently waited for his opportunity to lead a franchise.
Now, in his first year with the Seattle Seahawks, he's become the first Super Bowl-winning quarterback from that class of 2018, even ahead of Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. More than that, as reported by the NFL on X, he did so in a unique fashion.
"The first starting QB in history to win a Super Bowl after playing with 5+ teams," the post read.
Darnold was humble enough to realize he had to sit and learn. He didn't give up; he put his head down, got to work and made the most of the chance he got.
Just last season, the Minnesota Vikings gave up on him — just like the Jets, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers did — right after leading them to a 14-3 season.
He's yet another example of how being in the right environment can make or break a player's career. He's also the easiest guy to root for in the league.
He's not going to see ghosts anymore, just the Vince Lombardi trophy.
