Aaron Rodgers reveals major update about contract status with Steelers

During a Wednesday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," current Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback and soon-to-be free agent Aaron Rodgers made it clear that he wouldn't be breaking significant news about his future plans.

Rodgers did, however, reveal somewhat of an interesting update regarding his situation.

Have Steelers sent Aaron Rodgers a new contract?

Per Ross McCorkle of Steelers Depot, Rodgers confirmed that he has spoken with Pittsburgh general manager Omar Khan and recently hired head coach Mike McCarthy since the club's 30-6 wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans in January.

"There's been no deadline that's been put in front of me," Rodgers explained. "There's no contract offer or anything. So there's nothing that I'm having to debate between. I'm a free agent and, again, I'm enjoying my time with my wife and enjoying this part of the offseason. I think there's conversations to be had down the line. There hasn't been any progressive conversations."

Previous reports made it known the Steelers were in "no hurry" for Rodgers to declare his intentions for the 2026 season, seemingly because they are confident the 42-year-old will serve as Pittsburgh's QB1 for one more campaign. As recently as Monday, a story claimed that "the Steelers believe they’ll get an answer from Rodgers in the next few weeks."

Aaron Rodgers opens up about relationship with Mike McCarthy

McCarthy was first Rodgers' head coach when they were with the Green Bay Packers from 2006 through a portion of the 2018 season. Some have questioned if the two are close after their relationship reportedly soured over their last few campaigns together in Green Bay, but Rodgers insisted on Wednesday that he doesn't "think you can do better at this time in this franchise’s history than bringing in a guy like Mike McCarthy."

"Mike’s one of the great guys in the league," Rodgers added, per Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "Just an absolutely exceptional human being with a huge heart. We had a lot of great years together, a lot of fun. He really cares about the players. But he also holds guys accountable and creates a lot of structure and details in the process. I loved my time with Mike. Obviously, there are times where, like a big brother, sometimes you love him, sometimes you’re p----- at him. But deep down, there’s so much love for Mike and appreciation for the time we spent together."

It remains to be seen if that love will result in Rodgers playing for the Steelers later this year. That said, it certainly seems as if the two sides have some things to work out before the "legal tampering" portion of free agency opens March 9 noon ET.
