Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube made a surprising move by ruling out winger Bobby McMann, center Scott Laughton, and defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson for the game against the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
This decision is especially relevant because we are just days away from the NHL trade deadline on March 6, and the three players mentioned have been linked to possible departures.
But it was particularly surprising because Berube said on Wednesday morning that no one would be scratched. That stance changed just before the game against the Devils.
On Monday, McMann, 29, spoke about the speculation surrounding him before the trade deadline. The forward acknowledged that his career with the Leafs has been nothing but fun so far, and although he recognized that his future was open, he preferred to declare that he remains focused on helping the team.
Journalist David Pagnotta reported that Toronto was in contract conversations with McMann, amid rumors linking him to the Edmonton Oilers. On the other hand, insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that the possibility of him being traded is real. That version is reinforced by Berube's most recent decision.
On the other hand, Laughton, 31, also spoke about his possible departure from the team on Monday. The veteran Leafs player pointed out that each player lives their own situation, but that, for his part, he remained focused on his contribution to Toronto, though he acknowledged that it is sometimes difficult to go through this situation.
In the case of Ekman-Larsson, 34, it was reported last week that the Maple Leafs had a more than interesting offer for their veteran defenseman.
On a recent edition of "Oilers NOW," Edmonton Oilers radio color commentator Bob Stauffer said, "The Leafs, I'm told, have a number one for Oliver Ekman-Larsson. That's what I'm hearing through the grapevine."
It seems only a matter of time before these three players find a new team. In all cases, there are pros and cons, and everything will depend on the deal Toronto gets, which must prioritize getting good picks and prospects.
