As of Friday, it seemed like the New York Giants were prepared to hold onto defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II through at least the start of the 2026 NFL Draft after he submitted a trade request because he wanted to receive both a pay raise and a fresh start with a different team.
However, the Giants then surprised many when they traded Lawrence to the Cincinnati Bengals for the No. 10 selection in this week's draft. As part of the deal, the Bengals signed Lawrence to a one-year, $28M contract extension.
In the spring of 2023, he signed a four-year, $90M extension.
Connor Hughes of SNY was among the reporters who explained why Big Blue pulled the trigger on one of the more surprising transactions of the offseason.
According to Hughes, the Giants "still hoped they could figure out something to keep Lawrence," but offers presented to the player's camp were not "good enough" to appease him.
"They tried – and kept trying," Hughes explained. "They simply couldn’t agree to the structure of a reworked deal. Lawrence, per team sources, never even gave the team an idea of what he was looking for in terms of per-year salary or guarantees."
Hughes added that four NFL head coaches "were stunned New York got what they did" for Lawrence coming off the worst statistical season of his career. On Sunday, ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Jeremy Fowler and Ben Baby shared that "nobody was going to beat the 10th pick" regarding a Lawrence trade.
As for Lawrence, he participated in just two playoff games and one postseason win (both in January 2023) while with the Giants.
"Lawrence was open to a fresh start since the beginning of last year," league sources told the ESPN reporters. "At the time, he had just watched his friend and former teammate, Saquon Barkley, fight with the organization for several years over his contract, then leave for the division-rival Philadelphia Eagles and win Super Bowl LIX. Lawrence's close friend, Leonard Williams, was shipped to the Seattle Seahawks in a 2023 midseason trade."
Like Barkley, Williams is now a Super Bowl champion.
Interestingly, Paul Schwartz of the New York Post revealed that agent Joel Segal prevented Giants head coach John Harbaugh from speaking directly to Lawrence during the contract saga. It was previously suggested that Lawrence may not want to play for Harbaugh, but Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted that "Harbaugh and his 'who’s got it better than us?' personality could have weakened Lawrence’s will."
That's no longer a concern for Segal, as Lawrence has a new football home ahead of the draft.
