Steve Kerr has been the head coach of the Golden State Warriors for 12 seasons, and it has been an incredible run.
He's won three championships as a coach and has been the head man for one of the greatest dynasties in NBA history.
The Warriors have now officially not made the playoffs for the past four seasons in a row, though, and Kerr, 60, is apparently mulling his future over. He thinks that he's perhaps come to his natural conclusion with Golden State.
"I still love coaching, but I get it," Kerr said this past Friday evening after the Warriors were eliminated from the play-in tournament. "These jobs all have an expiration date. There is a run that happens, and when the run ends, sometimes it's time for new blood and new ideas."
That sounds like a coach who is ready to move on, and if the Warriors do have to replace him this offseason, they reportedly already have a target in mind.
According to reporters Kevin O'Connor and Kelly Iko, the Warriors would go after Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden.
"If Steve Kerr leaves, the Warriors will pursue Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden, according to my league sources," O'Connor said. "And within that ESPN story, they mentioned they might look at the college ranks. Golden is the coach that they're targeting, and that's in part because the Lacob family has a relationship with him."
Before Golden, 40, became head coach of the Gators, he was the head coach of the San Francisco Dons. He was in the Bay Area for three seasons and even took the Dons to the NCAA Tournament.
That's where he apparently got to know Joseph Lacob, the owner of the Warriors.
Per O'Connor, Golden and Lacob have even sat down and had lunches together in the past.
"Those guys know each other, and Golden is a very, very talented young head coach. So I think for the Warriors, Golden would be near the top of their list, if not at the top of their list," he said.
Golden is 103-41 at Florida in four seasons with one national championship already under his belt. The Gators will undoubtedly fight to keep him in Gainesville, but one would imagine the chance to be an NBA coach with a world-class organization would be enticing for the young coach.
