Carson Hocevar captivated Talladega crowd unlike any driver since Dale Earnhardt

Not since a driver with an Earnhardt in their last name led the field at Talladega Superspeedway had a NASCAR driver elicited such a roar from the Alabama superspeedway's grandstands.

Carson Hocevar's first career NASCAR Cup Series win in Sunday's Jack Link's 500 brought a packed crowd to their feet, only growing louder as an elongated, intentional and flashy celebration commenced.

The 23-year-old driver from Portage, Mich., has drawn comparisons to a young Earnhardt for his aggressive, unapologetic, rough-and-tumble driving style. So it's only appropriate that his first career win came at the venue where Earnhardt won a record 10 times, including his final career win in 2000.

It's also fitting that Hocevar won the race driving a black Chevrolet and, just as Earnhardt did while cleaning his mud-splattered windshield under caution at Richmond in 1986, drove while hanging out of the driver's side window.

Is Carson Hocevar the next Dale Earnhardt?

Hocevar then parked his No. 77 by the start-finish line and gave the Talladega faithful a smoke show they aren't likely to forget anytime soon.

It's not as if Sunday's race is the first peek at Hocevar's budding popularity and stardom, however. The third-year driver is, at the very least, often talked about because of his aforementioned aggression. But it's his Earnhardt-esque quality of not caring what others think of him that make him attractive to fans, sponsors and his team in Spire Motorsports.

Hocevar is locked up for the long term with Spire, who, as an organization, is on the up and up. And like a young Earnhardt with what was then a young Richard Childress Racing team in the 1980s, success looks like it could be coming down the tracks rather quickly for Hocevar.
