Multiple reports from throughout the spring have suggested that the New York Giants will give veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. a chance to compete for a roster spot this summer.
During a Thursday appearance on NFL Network, Giants general manager Joe Schoen offered no guarantees to fans who are hoping that Beckham will return to the first home of his pro career.
"No updates on that," Schoen said about the Beckham situation, per Kevin McCormick of Heavy. "We worked him out a couple weeks ago, and he did a good job in terms of that. We signed a new couple new defensive tackles yesterday, so we’re going to continue to always work on the roster regardless of the position and try to upgrade where we can, and Odell is a guy we had in for a workout, and we’ll continue to have conversations with his camp."
Beckham reportedly "looked quite good" and "ran well" during the workout referenced by Schoen. Additionally, a story from this week noted that Giants head coach John Harbaugh "loves" Beckham. Beckham previously played under Harbaugh when the two were with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2023 season.
That said, Beckham hasn't played in an NFL regular-season game since December 2024. He has a concerning injury history, and he will turn 34 years old this coming November. Thus, he likely won't be promised anything from the Giants or a different team other than opportunities to impress during training camp practices and preseason games.
Beckham became a favorite among Giants fans when he earned three Pro Bowl nods while playing for the club from 2014 through the 2018 season.
Meanwhile, recent whispers suggested that Harbaugh, who is truly running the Giants' football operations, could show Schoen the door before the ongoing week came to an end. It certainly sounds like Schoen believes he will remain in his role for the foreseeable future.
"Yeah, I would think so," Schoen responded when asked if the Giants are ready to compete for at least a playoff berth during the upcoming season. "And yeah, you're right, we only won four games (this past campaign), and that's not good enough. We had five games where we had leads in the fourth quarter, some of those double digits, and you would have liked to have been able to close them out."
Schoen added that he's "excited about some of the additions" the Giants made to the roster this offseason. Nothing about the interview would lead one to believe that it was Schoen's final official act as a Giants executive.
