The long-term future of Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has sparked numerous discussions over the past handful of years.
While Reid has not yet publicly indicated he's ready to call time on his coaching career, it sounds like some within the NFL believe he could be one big win away from riding off into the sunset of retirement.
For a FanSided article published on Wednesday, NFL insider Jason La Canfora spoke with unnamed team executives and general managers "who have some time on their hands" this spring. Those conversations led La Canfora to predict that Reid will retire if the Chiefs win Super Bowl LXI.
"You hear these rumblings every few years, but I’m starting to pick up on them again recently about Reid thinking he's running out of gas," La Canfora wrote about Reid. "And for all the people who have told me at this point that 'Big Red' will keep coaching until he shatters every record there is, the people who whispered that maybe 2026 is it have a pretty damn good track record on such hunches."
For what it is worth, Reid suggested in February 2025 that he doesn't care about being considered the GOAT of his profession and instead was still coaching because he enjoys "teaching" players. Per Alex Kennedy of ESPN, living legend Don Shula's 347 career victories (encompassing regular and postseason totals) are the most in NFL history. Reid will enter the upcoming campaign on 307 total wins.
Meanwhile, Bill Belichick leads all head coaches with six career Super Bowl wins. Reid is among the coaches with three Super Bowl rings.
Reid turned 68 years old in March, and he needed knee surgery earlier in the offseason. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes seems to be making a remarkable recovery from the torn ACL and torn LCL he suffered this past December, but tight end Travis Kelce may enter his "Last Dance" season this coming September.
In short, there are legitimate reasons for one to believe Reid could retire if he gets his hands on the Vince Lombardi Trophy in February 2027.
"Who knows if they will win the Super Bowl?" La Canfora added about the 2026 Chiefs. "But if they do, man, you just wonder if, after all he’s been through, it might be time to call it a career. His health has been a concern at times. Some of their key pieces are nearing the end. The allure of being with Patrick Mahomes as long as possible has to be quite strong, but, then again, nothing lasts forever."
