Orioles have a star in the making with Samuel Basallo

The Baltimore Orioles have a rising star on their hands, who, at 21 years old, has made an indelible mark.

Rookie catcher Samuel Basallo has been on an offensive tear, hitting .354 with six home runs, 19 RBI and slugging .636 in his last 30 games. He made his MLB debut with the Orioles in August 2025 and made a lasting impact, going 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Days later, the Orioles bestowed their confidence and long-term commitment on the youngster by signing him to an eight-year, $67 million contract extension.

Across 150 plate appearances this season, he ranks third amongst MLB catchers with a 138 wRC+, a .516 slugging percentage and an .860 OPS. He ranks second with a 48.3 percent hard-hit rate, illustrating his exceptional offensive output at such a young age against qualified catchers.

How Samuel Basallo is developing as Baltimore's future cornerstone player

Since the Orioles locked him down, he has blossomed into a solid power hitter. His hard-hit rate of 48.3 percent and average exit velocity of 92.3 mph exemplify his undeniable raw power.

In May, he showcased his ability by hitting dominantly against MLB pitching, batting .338. Basallo has meshed well with All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman, performing as a dynamic duo.

Rutschman supplies elite defense and acts as a mentor, while Basallo delivers offensive versatility and top-tier power. Overall, they present themselves as one of the most efficient catching tandems in MLB.

Since April 20, Basallo has peaked offensively, dishing out his early breakout campaign across a minimum of 100 plate appearances. He ranks first with a .363 batting average, 1.044 OPS and 180 wRC+. He ranks third with a .637 slugging percentage and second with a .433 BABIP.

Along with his .974 OPS in May and Munetaka Murakami being sidelined for a significant period, Basallo has the opportunity to cement himself as a solid candidate for the AL Rookie of the Year race.
