The uncertain future of Alvin Kamara has hovered over the New Orleans Saints ever since they signed fellow running back Travis Etienne Jr. to a four-year deal reportedly worth $52M earlier this offseason.
While speaking with reporters, Saints head coach Kellen Moore confirmed that Kamara reported for Wednesday’s voluntary OTA practice.
"Alvin got here today," Moore said, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "He’s here. So, we’ll kind of work through an acclamation process there, getting to work with him. It’s good to see him. Just saw him right at the team meeting as we were starting."
As Nick Shook of the NFL's website explained in May, Kamara is set to account for $10.4M in salary-cap space for 2026. According to Shook, cutting Kamara at any point "would significantly reduce the dead cap number [the Saints would] have to carry in 2027, a void year that is scheduled to eat up $16.26M in space if Kamara spends the upcoming season with the Saints," now that June 1 has come and gone.
"I don’t think necessarily anything’s been done there," Moore said about the status of Kamara's existing contract. "But, it’s good to see him. Obviously, a lot of times this time of year, he’s not always here — similar to last year. So, it’s good to see him and excited to spend a little bit of time talking with him, seeing where he’s all at."
Moore also insisted that Kamara "can fit in really well from an offensive standpoint." Such a comment is understandable, as Moore and Co. likely want second-year quarterback Tyler Shough to have as many weapons available to him as possible this coming fall.
ESPN stats show that Kamara ended the 2025 season, Moore's first in charge of the Saints, with team highs of 131 carries and 471 rushing yards. Over 11 games, Kamara tallied one rushing touchdown, 33 receptions and 186 receiving yards.
"As you navigate some of the business stuff, signing Travis, kind of navigating how all these pieces work together, I think that’s always a little bit of a challenge as you’re building your roster," Moore added. "And so, obviously, it was really good to see [Kamara]. Fired up for that and excited to kind of build from here."
Whether or not such excitement will result in Kamara, 30, staying with the Saints through the start of the 2026 season shall be seen.
