Not all stretches during an NFL season are created equal. A favorable month can launch a playoff push. A brutal one can bury a team before Thanksgiving leftovers hit the fridge.
Let's examine the most difficult four-game stretches for each AFC North team — the gauntlets that could define division races, shape playoff hopes and, in some cases, determine whether coaches and QBs enter the offseason under pressure.
Weeks 7-10: vs. Cincinnati Bengals (Oct. 25), at Buffalo Bills (Nov. 1), vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Nov. 5), vs. Los Angeles Chargers (Nov. 16) |
The Ravens finished the 2026 season with the NFL's 30th-ranked pass defense, and it was one of the biggest reasons they missed the playoffs with a disappointing 8-9 record.
That defense, with new star Trey Hendrickson, is going to be put to the test in the middle of the season when they have to face Joe Burrow, Josh Allen, Trevor Lawrence and Justin Herbert in consecutive weeks. That is four potential Super Bowl contenders and four of the league's top quarterbacks right in a row.
Weeks 1-4: vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Sept. 13), at Houston Texans (Sept. 20), at Pittsburgh Steelers (Sept. 27), vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (Oct. 4) |
The Bengals are looking to snap a two-year playoff drought and are hoping that a revamped defensive front and a healthy Burrow can help get them back into the postseason.
They are getting a massive challenge right at the start of the season with a home game against Tampa Bay and then three consecutive playoff teams. You can't make the playoffs in the first four weeks, but you can definitely put yourself in a hole that can keep you out. The Bengals are going to be tested right away.
The schedule should significantly soften after that, but it is still going to be an early challenge.
Weeks 1-4: at Jacksonville Jaguars (Sept. 13), at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Sept. 20), vs. Carolina Panthers (Sept. 27), vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (Oct. 1) |
The good news for the Browns is they play one of the NFL's softest schedules in 2026.
The bad news: Just like their cross-state rivals in Cincinnati, their toughest games come right at the start, including back-to-back road games at Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. Road games in Florida in early September creates its own set of challenges for a team, and it only gets tougher when those Florida teams are also potential playoff teams.
Weeks 11-14: at Philadelphia Eagles (Nov. 22), vs. Denver Broncos (Nov. 27), vs. Houston Texans (Dec. 6), at Jacksonville Jaguars (Dec. 14) |
The Steelers' schedule between weeks 11 and 14 is going to significantly impact their ability to make the playoffs for a third year in a row. They will have four consecutive Super Bowl contenders in a row, including two elite defenses in Denver and Houston, with one of those games (Denver) coming on a short week with a Black Friday game against the Broncos.
Even worse, this four-game stretch is preceded by a game at Cincinnati and followed by a home game against Baltimore. You could shift this four-game stretch one week in either direction, and it will still be a gauntlet to get through.
