Diego Pavia's Ravens tenure ends before it even had a chance to begin

The Ravens are only likely to keep two quarterbacks on their active roster, and with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley already in place, there was virtually no chance for a player like Pavia unless he forced their hands into keeping a third. Even then, he was also competing with veteran Skylar Thompson and fellow undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano. 

That does not even get into the other issues that could be surrounding Pavia's NFL hopes, including his lack of size (5-foot-10) and questionable NFL arm strength, or the fact he is already 24 years old and older than most rookies just entering the league. There is a serious ceiling to his upside, and the odds are simply stacked against him.

Still, a training-camp and preseason opportunity would have at least given him a chance to show other teams what he might be able to do.

He might still get that chance with somebody else, but it does not seem like it is going to be the Ravens.

If nothing else, it is another strong reminder as to how much of a talent gap there is between the NCAA and NFL. In college, Pavia was an outstanding player. He was so good that he became Heisman Trophy runner-up playing for a power-conference school that was not a traditional football power when he arrived. But in the NFL, he is getting cut one day before training camp after not even hearing his name called at the NFL Draft.

It is a brutally tough league.
