Chiefs' Andy Reid shares massive injury recovery update for Patrick Mahomes amid Week 1 goal

A previous report revealed that Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes would "be fully cleared this week" for the start of training camp.

While speaking with reporters on Friday, head coach Andy Reid shared an update that likely put smiles on the faces of Chiefs fans heading into the weekend. 

Patrick Mahomes "cleared to go ahead and participate full" in training camp practices

"Pat’s doing great with his [rehab]," Reid said, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "Right now he’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods that we have in this camp. We’ll just take it day by day and see how he does. He’ll have plenty of eyes on him from coaches to trainers to doctors. But right now, he’s been cleared to go ahead and participate fully."

While Mahomes suffered a torn ACL and torn LCL on Dec. 14, 2025, he has repeatedly said throughout 2026 that his "goal" is to play in Kansas City's 2026 Week 1 "Monday Night Football" home game versus the rival Denver Broncos on Sept. 14. On Friday, Reid was unwilling to make any promises about Mahomes' availability for that contest. 

"I’m optimistic, and I know he is extremely optimistic," Reid said about Mahomes possibly being in the lineup against the Broncos. "But I think you’ve got to see how things go here. Let’s just see where we’re at and not make any predictions or anything else. Take it day by day and see where it goes."

Will Chiefs limit Patrick Mahomes during summer workouts? 

Numerous members of the NFL community have voiced concerns about Mahomes possibly rushing back before he should and about what he may and/or may not be able to physically do if he tries to play on Sept. 14. There's no way of knowing as of July 24 if Mahomes will endure any sort of setback over the next month and a half, but it sounds as if he will be permitted to push himself from the opening day of training camp. 

"We’ll see about games and all that once we get there," Reid added about Mahomes. "But right now, we’re just going to take it day by day and see how he does. He’s been up here every day, doing his thing, rehabbing. I mentioned before how much time he spent — if anybody spent time doing this thing the right way, he’s it. We appreciate that. And he’s been given clearance by the doctors to work. And they’re pretty comfortable with that. But keeping an eye on him." 

The Chiefs open the preseason with a matchup versus the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 15. It remains to be seen if Mahomes will take even a few snaps on that Saturday.
