Cowboys executive opens up about controversial George Pickens decision

Shortly after the Dallas Cowboys retained the rights to wide receiver George Pickens via the franchise tag, they made it clear he would not receive a multiyear contract extension this offseason. 

Pickens later confirmed that he will play for the Cowboys on the franchise tag worth roughly $27.3M for the 2026 season. Meanwhile, the deadline for teams to sign tagged players to multiyear contracts came and went earlier this month. 

During a recent appearance on the "Doin' Alright" podcast, Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay explained the team's handling of the Pickens situation. 

Cowboys stuck to "philosophy" with George Pickens

"At the end of the day, you have different opportunities to figure out how you put your team together," McClay said, per Sean Deveney of Heavy. "Public perception is, you should sign this guy and do that. But I don’t tell you how to run your checkbook, and you don’t tell me how to run mine, or businesses. And so, really, everybody’s philosophy is a little bit different."

This past May, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said that he wanted Pickens to answer certain "questions" while playing on the tag. More recently, it was suggested that people within the Cowboys want Pickens to prove that he can "be a pro - every day." 

The Cowboys reportedly fined Pickens at least once last season for "being late to things," and he was also accused of looking "uninterested in playing football" during multiple games. Before that, the Pittsburgh Steelers reportedly grew tired of Pickens' antics when he was their player from the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft up until Pittsburgh traded him to Dallas in the spring of 2025.

That said, Pickens recorded 93 receptions for 1,429 yards and nine touchdowns during his first season with the Cowboys. 

Cowboys still "love" George Pickens despite lack of long-term commitment

"We love George Pickens," McClay added. "Finding a way to field a team with 53 of the best players in today’s day and age is very, very difficult. So you go through all of the contracts and the different aspects and all those different ways, and you put it together. That situation with George presented itself in such a way that we could do it that way and still keep our team together. That’s the best way I can put it."

It remains to be seen if the Cowboys will "love" Pickens enough to sign him to a lucrative contract extension in early 2027. For what it's worth, Dallas reportedly could afford to retain Pickens' rights for 2027 via the franchise tag and also keep No. 1 wide receiver CeeDee Lamb on the roster.
