Dylan Cease dominates to a monumental level in Blue Jays' win

Rebounding from a rough outing five days earlier, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Dylan Cease was at his best on Saturday.

Cease led his team to a much-needed win after they dropped the first game of their series with the Red Sox in Boston on Friday.

Cease also didn't just do enough to earn the win; he went the distance as the Blue Jays blanked the Red Sox to the tune of 6-0. And his complete game shutout became a monumental performance for the franchise.

In a start that was almost a no-hitter, Cease allowed no runs off just one hit while striking out 12 batters and walking only three.

He recorded the Blue Jays' first one-hit complete game in 16 years, with the last being Shaun Marcum on August 16, 2010. It even marked the first one-hit shutout of any kind since eight days before Marcum on August 8, 2010.

Cease endured a rough outing in his last start before Saturday

Prior to his dominance on Saturday, Cease, who was named an All-Star for the first time in his career this season, gave up a pair of home runs and five runs (three earned) in a loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. But overall, he's been mostly solid in his first season in Toronto.

With now 19 starts under his belt, Cease has a 7-5 record with a 2.46 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 113.1 innings pitched. He has a 1.09 WHIP and has 48 walks.

Since making his MLB debut in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, Cease has won 72 games and carries a 3.74 ERA and 1,398 strikeouts - he's surpassed 200 in five straight years and put up a personal-best of 227 in 2022. Last season was the worst full season of Cease's career, as he finished 8-12 with a 4.55 ERA with the San Diego Padres.
