Nathan Lukes' impactful defense a bright spot for struggling Blue Jays

While the Toronto Blue Jays' postseason hopes continue to fade as they are now 10 games under .500 following a tough 6-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Friday night, Nathan Lukes has continued to make a significant impact with his defense.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Lukes made a tremendous throw from left field to get Caleb Durbin out at the plate and save a run for the Blue Jays.

He's a versatile defender as he can play all three outfield positions. His arm value (2.0) ranks in the 89th percentile, and his arm strength of 90.4 mph sits in the 88th percentile. While he's spent most of his time playing in right field this season (59 games), he's played 11 games each in both left and center field.

He has also recorded four assists and has committed only one error, while sporting an exceptional .992 fielding percentage. Overall, he's an underrated player who the Blue Jays shouldn't even hesitate to re-sign.

Nathan Lukes continues to prove his defensive worth

Lukes has been a defensive standout all season. On Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays, he threw out Taylor Wall at second base when he tried to turn a single into a double.

On the same day, he also took away extra bases from Richie Palacios by making an unbelievable wall catch in right field.

On June 29, against the New York Mets as well as on June 8 against the Philadelphia Phillies, he made stellar diving catches to close out frames.

In addition, against the Seattle Mariners on July 5, Lukes made a terrific catch off a line drive from Luke Raley and successfully doubled a runner who drifted off second base to record a dynamite double play.

All things considered, his importance to the Blue Jays can't be emphasized enough as he will continue to serve as a star outfielder.
