Former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel lands minor league contract amid comeback attempt

Former Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel isn't done yet.

According to MLB insider Jeff Passan, Keuchel and the Athletics have agreed to a minor league deal.

The 38-year-old hasn't pitched at the major league level since 2024 with the Milwaukee Brewers and will report to Triple-A (Las Vegas Aviators).

Whether Keuchel is capable of making it back to the big leagues remains to be seen, but his desire to continue pitching at his age demonstrates his passion for the game.

Keuchel is ultimately striving to deliver every last bit of success he has left in him, as this could be his last chance to showcase his skills. If he's able to provide even a portion of his once dominant form, this underrated signing could pan out for the A's.

What Dallas Keuchel can offer to the Athletics

Keuchel was added by the A's to provide veteran pitching depth as well as supplying them with an extra arm amid a taxed rotation. Their recent injuries include a right shoulder strain to Luis Severino and a blister issue for J.T. Ginn.

The A's own the worst bullpen ERA (5.54 ERA) and rank second-to-last with a 5.34 rotation ERA, which has led to the low-risk signing that offers them much-needed depth.

Keuchel will have to prove that he's capable of pitching in the majors by being stretched out in Triple-A, since he has been inactive in MLB. In 2024, he sported a 5.40 ERA across 16.2 innings for the Brewers. His most recent minor league stint was in 2025, where he pitched for the Kansas City Royals' Triple-A affiliate team (Omaha Storm Chasers).

He recorded a 2-1 record with a 3.53 ERA before he was released. Nevertheless, Keuchel is striving to make a late-career resurgence. It will be interesting to see if his attempt will be successful for the A's, who started the season on a high note, but their performance started taking a downturn in late May.
