Buccaneers risk Baker Mayfield exit after 2026 following extension deadline

The 2026 season could be quarterback Baker Mayfield's last with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after the two sides failed to reach a contract extension ahead of a self-imposed training camp deadline.

Per reports, the 2018 No. 1 overall pick is set to play on an expiring contract this fall, raising stakes for the upcoming campaign.

Mayfield is entering his fourth season as Bucs starting quarterback after first signing a one-year, prove-it deal as Tom Brady's replacement in 2023. The former Cleveland Browns quarterback led Tampa Bay to the playoffs in his first two seasons and was in the midst of an MVP-caliber campaign in 2025 before mounting injuries took their toll and impacted his performance. 

Through the first nine games of the season, Mayfield completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 2,192 yards, 16 touchdowns and two interceptions. Over the final eight games, his completion rate dipped 2.2 percentage points (61.9 percent) as he threw for 1,501 yards, 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Bucs finished 8-9 and missed the postseason for the first time since 2019.

With another non-playoff season, Tampa may be inclined to make a clean break and allow Mayfield to walk in free agency next March.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Jenna Laine, "Sources close to the situation [say] that Mayfield is looking for a deal that reflects his performance and is in line with what quarterbacks of a similar caliber are making."

Mayfield is set to play on the third season of a three-year, $100M contract extension signed in March 2024, with is $33.3M AAV ranking No. 16 among quarterback heading into training camp. With 12 quarterbacks earning over $50M per year, he's likely expecting money in that range, and Mayfield could certainly get that by returning to his early 2025 form.

Fowler and Laine described the eight-year veteran as "unfazed" over the possibility of being franchise tagged next offseason if Tampa elects to retain him but can't agree on an extension, with the NFL insiders noting projections estimate the 2027 tag on quarterbacks being "roughly $50 million."

But after a disappointing end to the 2025 season, there's legitimate questions about how much further a core led by Mayfield at quarterback can go. Tampa already watched longtime franchise stalwart Mike Evans depart in free agency, and former Super Bowl champ Vita Vea recently requested a trade amid failed contract talks. Bucs brass appear hesitant through their actions to commit to this path long-term, and it might take a playoff run to be convinced not to enter a rebuild.
