Padres slam teams with major Mason Miller trade news

As expected, Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal is on the move. 

The Los Angeles Dodgers added even more firepower to their already stacked rotation by adding the two-time AL Cy Young winner, leaving Mason Miller as the biggest fish still up for grabs ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET.

The Padres star closer has been linked to multiple teams in recent weeks, mainly the New York Yankees. However, as Dennis Lin of The Athletic pointed out, it looks like the Friars won't give him up.

The Padres may not trade Mason Miller after all

“Another sign Mason Miller almost certainly isn’t going anywhere: Two days before the trade deadline, Padres manager Craig Stammen has summoned his star closer for a five-out save attempt against the Giants,” Lin wrote. “Miller last went more than three outs on June 23, when he recorded a two-inning save versus the Braves.”

All things considered, this isn't that big a surprise. The Padres are back in the playoff race, and while they're not the powerhouse they hoped they'd be, they can still make plenty of noise. Miller has been spectacular this season, posting a 0.76 ERA and 0.80 WHIP to go along with 88 strikeouts and 28 saves in 45 appearances.

And with the Dodgers adding Skubal to their behemoth of a team, holding onto Miller might be the Padres' lone shot at dethroning the back-to-back World Series champions. With Aroldis Chapman also likely off the table, teams looking for a star closer will have to get creative.
