Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck emerged as the breakout star of this year's Hall of Fame Game, so Arizona fans understandably were excited to see if he could produce a repeat performance during Thursday night's preseason matchup at the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, it was learned hours before kickoff of Thursday's contest that Beck wouldn't play due to a rib injury that he suffered in the Hall of Fame Game. Following the Cardinals' 27-14 win over the Raiders, first-year Arizona head coach Mike LaFleur shared a noteworthy update on Beck's status.
"Tough dude. No concern level really," LaFleur said about Beck's injury, per Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk. "If this would have been flag football or seven-on-seven, we would have trotted him out there, and he could have thrown."
Against the Carolina Panthers back on Aug. 6, Beck completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards, a touchdown and zero interceptions. Despite that impressive performance, it was later reported that journeyman Jacoby Brissett remained on track to serve as the Cardinals' Week 1 QB1.
Back in late July, Brissett received a reworked deal that likely ensured he will be atop the depth chart through the start of the regular season as long as he is healthy. Against the Raiders, he completed all five of his passes for 44 yards and one touchdown.
"He just had discomfort, and it’s one of those things I was actually talking to [Los Angeles Rams starting quarterback Matthew Stafford] about, and that sometimes a few days later, it feels a little bit worse," LaFleur added about Beck's setback. "Being the preseason, I just didn’t want to risk it. I know it was kind of a bummer for our fan base, and you guys, and me, and all of us, because we want to see these guys out there, but it was what it was. We thought that was in the best interest to make sure that we sat him back."
As of the morning of Aug. 14, it was too early to say if Beck will be cleared to play when the Cardinals host the Dallas Cowboys on Aug. 22.
