Former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is entering his second year as head coach of the New York Jets. Unfortunately for Glenn, the team didn't do too well last season. The Jets went 3-14.
In an interview with The Athletic, Glenn opened up about last season and his initial experience with the Jets. He was honest about it and said it was a horrible time.
In the piece, reporter Jonathan Jones discusses how the Jets went 0-7 to start the season, then had a historically ugly stretch to end the season. Their defense was horrible. That's not a great look for a former defensive coordinator. That's supposed to be his specialty.
"The defense, infamously, never intercepted a pass, the first team in recorded NFL history with that distinction," Jones notes in the piece. "The embarrassment was even more tightly packed into the season's final month, when the Jets became the first team in NFL history to lose five straight games by 23 or more points in a single season."
So, what did Glenn have to say about it? "Worst football experience I have had," he said. That explains it all.
But, it's not all on Glenn. As Jones points out, NFL insiders have commented on the reality that when Glenn took over, the Jets were coming off a 5-12 and then "got rid of all the best players."
"I'm not saying those weren't the right decisions," a coach said in the Athletic feature. "You had an old roster, but you've got to be realistic and live with the consequences."
Now, the former Lions DC is coming up on his second season with the Jets. Hopefully he wins some games, because Glenn is a solid coach, even if his current record doesn't show it.
