Almost immediately after it was learned that New York Giants wide receiver Calvin Austin III had suffered a torn ACL at Tuesday's practice, fans and analysts speculated that the setback could open the door for Odell Beckham Jr. to make the club's initial 53-man active roster.
During a Wednesday appearance on New York sports radio station WFAN, Giants general manager Joe Schoen addressed Beckham's status heading into the club's preseason finale against the New York Jets.
"I think the kid can still play," Schoen said of Beckham, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN. "He's going to play on Friday, and we're going to continue to evaluate those guys. But he has shown enough that he can still play."
Beckham remains a popular figure among many Giants fans from when he earned three Pro Bowl nods while with the franchise from the 2014 NFL Draft through the 2018 season. That said, he hasn't played in a regular-season game since he notched nine catches for 55 yards over nine contests with the Miami Dolphins in 2024. Additionally, Beckham will turn 34 years old in November, and he has a lengthy injury history.
While it's fair to wonder whether Beckham truly has anything left in the tank as it pertains to contributing for a club in meaningful games, SNY's Connor Hughes noted that the veteran looked impressive in back-to-back practices this week.
"I think Odell's had a good camp," Giants head coach John Harbaugh said after Wednesday's practice. "I would say his best week of camp has come this week. He's looked good and made numerous plays, just like you saw. Even [Wednesday, he] made numerous plays. So, he's doing that."
Raanan added that Beckham "now seems to be the front-runner to be the fifth wide receiver based on usage throughout training camp." Giants fans will learn of Beckham's fate by the time final roster cuts are due at 6 p.m. ET on Aug. 30.
