Jonathan Kuminga just handed the Lakers an uncomfortable reality check

Jonathan Kuminga spurning the Los Angeles Lakers was one of the more interesting developments in the offseason. The young forward was tendered a three-year contract worth approximately $12 million annually, but he ended up signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kuminga signed for less money in order to head to Minny, taking a two-year, $13 million deal, betting on himself to earn his way to a more handsome payday in the future. He recently dished out his thoughts about choosing the Wolves over the Lakers, and his response will probably not garner rave reviews in Los Angeles. However, it is exactly what they needed to hear.

"Not to come off disrespectful, but I didn’t feel like Los Angeles was the right environment for me. There’s a level of expectation and outside noise surrounding the Lakers that can become distracting, and I wanted a situation where I could stay focused on basketball and my development. I also felt Minnesota offered a better defensive fit and a clearer role for me. Ultimately, it was the better situation."

As every player in the league knows, it is definitely a different kind of experience playing for the Lakers. For better or for worse, no franchise has more hoopla around them than the Lakers, and that is the main reason why playing for the team is not for the weak of heart.

There is a lot of turbulence around the franchise on and off the court. Even right now, the Lakers are dealing with some ownership issues that are affecting the front office structure and actual basketball operations. Outside the hardwood, no other team gets more narratives spun around them than the Lakers.

At this critical point in his young career, Kuminga badly needs a stable situation where he will get the right guidance with as little outside noise as possible. The Timberwolves may not be as covert as they used to be thanks to their recent winning and Anthony Edwards, but they remain much more modest when compared to the Lakers.

For now, Kuminga definitely made the more level-headed choice by going to Minnesota. While that could change, the Lakers have some soul-searching to do given their not-so-impressive track record as of late when it comes to recruiting coveted players.
