Darian Mensah's 2026 start compares favorably to Robert Griffin III Heisman season

Sportswriter Evan Sidery posted on X that Miami Hurricanes quarterback Darian Mensah is the first player to throw more touchdown passes than incompletions in his first three games since Robert Griffin III during his 2011 Heisman Trophy season. Mensah has 11 TD passes and eight incompletions, while Griffin III had 13 TDs and 12 incompletions through three games.

Mensah leads the FBS, completing 89.9 percent of his pass attempts. Mensah set ACC and Miami records by completing his first 24 passes against Wake Forest, which extended his overall streak to 35 consecutive completions.

Griffin III completed 72.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,293 yards, 37 TDs and six interceptions. He averaged 10.5 yards per attempt, 11.85 adjusted yards per attempt and 14.8 yards per completion while posting a 189.5 passer rating en route to winning the 2011 Heisman Trophy. 

Mensah has thrown for 873 yards, averages 11.1 yards per attempt, 13.84 adjusted yards per attempt and 12.3 yards per completion, with a 228.6 passer rating. Multiple sportsbooks have Mensah as their Heisman Trophy favorite.
