Lions star hit with largest Week 1 fine from the NFL

The Detroit Lions don't play a game on Sunday because they already had their Week 2 game on "Thursday Night Football" with a 41-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. That loss stung, but for one Lions player, there's even more to be upset about this weekend.

The NFL is laying down the law on one Lions player for his actions in the team's season opener against the New Orleans Saints.

Jahmyr Gibbs hit with the NFL's biggest punishment of Week 1

The NFL has slapped Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs with the biggest fine of the opening week of the NFL. He has to pay $23,027 for his actions in the team's game against the Saints. Specifically, he is getting fined for "Unnecessary Roughness" and "use of a helmet."

The play in questions happened on a touchdown run, where Gibbs lowered his helmet and it went into the chest of cornerback Quincy Riley. He actually wasn't flagged for the play, the NFL assessed it and decided it was worth a punishment.

"The rules are intended to protect the players from unnecessary risk, promote player safety and emphasize sportsmanship and respect of teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and fans," the NFL states on their official website.

"The fines collected are donated to the Professional Athletes Foundation to support Legends in need and the NFL Foundation to further support the health, safety and wellness of athletes across all levels," the NFL states, "including youth football and the communities that support the game."

So, the fine goes to a good cause. But, it still stings to have to pay the biggest of Week 1.
