Caleb Williams' injury against the Minnesota Vikings has brought out plenty of opinions, including criticism of his reaction to being carted off the field. Las Vegas Raiders star Maxx Crosby isn't interested in questioning the quarterback's toughness. In fact, he had quite a bit to say about Williams' talent, too.
During Tuesday's episode of "The Rush with Maxx Crosby," the Raiders defensive end defended Williams and joined his co-host, Brogan Roback, in praising the young quarterback's unusual abilities.
Williams suffered a hamstring injury against Minnesota, prompting comparisons to Paul Pierce and criticism over his decision to leave the field on a cart. Roback brought up the backlash, questioning how anyone watching from home could possibly know what Williams was experiencing.
Crosby agreed, explaining that an unfamiliar injury can be frightening, particularly for someone who hasn't dealt with many serious injuries.
"Everyone has an opinion about, 'Oh, why'd he react this way to this certain type of thing?' He might have never pulled a hammy in his life," Crosby said.
Drawing on his own experience, Crosby explained that the initial sensation of an injury can make a player fear something far worse has happened. He suggested Williams could have been experiencing those same emotions before knowing the extent of the damage.
Crosby also wished Williams well, expressing confidence that the quarterback would recover.
He wasn't making excuses for Chicago's performance, either. Crosby acknowledged that the Bears had struggled against Brian Flores' defense well before Williams left the game.
The conversation eventually returned to Williams' abilities, with Roback offering a particularly striking assessment.
"I really never seen anyone play the game like he does at the quarterback position," Roback said.
He specifically praised Williams' ability to scramble before suddenly firing an accurate pass 35 yards downfield, even when his body appears completely out of position.
Crosby agreed that Williams possesses an unusual skill set. He discussed how quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford, Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson have expanded expectations for the position.
He also mentioned Jayden Daniels' impressive rookie season before returning to Chicago's quarterback.
"Then you got Caleb who's doing s--- that is just different," Crosby said. "Not many people have seen it like that before."
That's considerable praise from one of the NFL's established pass-rushers, particularly when it comes during a conversation about an injury that has generated so much criticism.
Williams still has plenty to prove, and Chicago's disappointing performance against Minnesota isn't going away. But Crosby's comments offer a different perspective on a quarterback whose reaction to getting hurt has attracted nearly as much attention as his play.
For Crosby, there's a distinction between criticizing a quarterback's performance and questioning how he responds to an injury. And when it comes to Williams' ability to play the position, he clearly sees something worth appreciating.
