Meet Cavan Sullivan, the 16-year-old phenom leading the USMNT's post-World Cup boom

He's the youngest player to be called up to the USMNT since Freddy Adu in 2006

When it comes to sparkling young American soccer talent, attacker Freddy Adu remains the gold standard: he was a record-setting 16 years and 243 days old when he made his USMNT debut in January of 2006. (Sullivan, you will not be surprised to hear, was not yet born.) 

Sullivan is older than Adu, but only just: he's set to turn 17 on Sept. 28 of this year, making him the second-youngest player in history to make a senior American soccer roster.

He's the youngest MLS player in history...and the youngest person to debut in any major American or Canadian professional sport

But while Adu beat Cavan on the USMNT front, Cavan actually made his professional soccer debut before Adu managed his. He was just 14 years and 294 days old when he made his Major League Soccer debut for the Philadelphia Union in 2024.

He has registered more MLS goals and assists than any other player aged 16 or younger

Sullivan hasn't been a passenger in MLS, either. He's been a heavy contributor to a feisty Philadelphia side this season, and he's been responsible for 11 goal involvements in the league in 2026. That's a better record than Adu managed when he was Sullivan's age.

He has already signed a contract with Manchester City that will activate when he turns 18

The hype around Sullivan isn't limited to the United States. Manchester City scouted him many years ago and signed him to a unique developmental contract designed to keep him in Philadelphia until he turned 18. It was a thoughtful, well-constructed deal built with Sullivan's long-term health in mind, and it proves just how valuable City believes he could be.

"I think he's a pretty mature kid. I think he gets some of it," Sullivan's father Brendan said, via Kyle Bonagura of ESPN. "That's not to say we don't think there's going to be bumps along the way. We definitely know that. And I think that's part of the reason this collaboration between the Union and City Group is so important, because he really does have a safety net here."

He comes from a family of exceptional soccer players

Sullivan's mother was a Division 1 soccer captain at the University of Pennsylvania, and his cousin Chris Albright was a USMNT regular (and currently serves as the general manager of MLS club FC Cincinnati.) His older brother, Quinn, plays with him in Philadelphia and has earned several USMNT call-ups of his own: while he's absent from this roster, he was a key part of Pochettino's Gold Cup set-up in the summer of 2025. A heart-wrenching ACL injury kept the elder Sullivan out of Pochettino's World Cup selection process, but he's back to full fitness now and may well join his brother on the national team in the future.
