Bill Belichick's NFL reputation isn't buying him anything at North Carolina

Bill Belichick brought six Super Bowl rings and decades of NFL success to North Carolina. Three games into the season, the Tar Heels are getting a reminder that none of it comes with them on Saturdays.

North Carolina couldn't finish against Clemson

Belichick can walk into just about any football facility in America with more credibility than the person already standing inside it. On Saturdays, that credibility is worth exactly zero points.

North Carolina learned that against Dabo Swinney and Clemson. The Tar Heels had an opportunity to improve to 3-0 and earn the biggest win of the young Belichick era. Instead, Clemson scored 10 points over the final eight minutes to turn a North Carolina lead into a 28-20 loss.

For a program that hired Belichick to change expectations, those are the games that eventually have to become wins. Nobody reasonably expected Belichick to turn North Carolina into an immediate national championship contender. There was always going to be an adjustment period for a 74-year-old coach who spent nearly his entire career in the NFL.

Still, Belichick wasn't hired to make North Carolina interesting. He was hired to make it better.

Bill Belichick still has plenty to prove in college football

Belichick's arrival immediately gave North Carolina something it rarely enjoyed on this scale: national attention.

Every roster decision became news. His recruiting approach was dissected. NFL connections became selling points. Suddenly, North Carolina football was one of the most discussed programs in the country. That attention is valuable until the games begin. Then it becomes noise.

College football isn't the NFL with younger players. Belichick has to deal with recruiting, the transfer portal, NIL, revenue sharing and roster turnover while figuring out how to build a program instead of simply constructing an NFL roster.

His resume guarantees patience and attention. It doesn't guarantee this works. That's why losses like Clemson sting a little more. North Carolina didn't get embarrassed. The Tar Heels were in position to win and couldn't finish.

Belichick spent decades building a reputation as someone who knew how to win those games. North Carolina didn't hire the six Super Bowl rings. It hired the man who won them. Now, Belichick has to prove that translates.
