Jazz Chisholm Jr. calls out Yankees fans for booing as Rays complete ALDS sweep

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone sat second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. for the start of Wednesday's must-win Game 3 of the American League Division Series versus the Tampa Bay Rays.

As Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media noted, Yankees fans later loudly booed Chisholm after he popped out to first base while pinch-hitting for Jose Caballero in the bottom of the seventh inning of what became a 4-3 season-ending loss for the hosts. Following that defeat, Chisholm made it known he didn't understand receiving that reaction from the Yankee faithful in the Bronx.

Jazz Chisholm Jr.: Being booed during home playoff game is "confusing"

"It’s just confusing because it’s the playoffs and we’re trying to win games," Chisholm said, per Brendan Kuty of The Athletic. "So, you’re booing a guy that’s playing currently, trying to help the team win. And I’m hearing boos instead of trying to hype guys up, you know what I mean? ...It didn’t hurt me. Because, like I said, I’ve seen Aaron Judge get booed here, too. Who am I? That’s a three-time MVP."

Judge reacted to being booed during postseason games played at Yankee Stadium in October 2022 differently when he said he "would’ve booed too" and "didn’t take it personally." As for Chisholm's relationship with Yankees fans, his latest fielding blunder -- which occurred in Game 2 of the series -- left some supporters counting down the days until he is no longer associated with the club.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. has this wish for Yankees future after being booed

Josh Norris and J.J. Cooper of Baseball America are among those who have said that the Yankees will likely let Chisholm leave via free agency and then search for an upgrade at the position during the offseason. Miller noted that "Chisholm probably will move on," but Chisholm insisted that he does "hope to come back" because "this is where I want to be."

"I love it as a Yankee," Chisholm added, according to Miller. "I grew up as a Yankee fan, being from the Bahamas watching Derek Jeter and those guys every day. It was a great time being a Yankee. I love my time here. I had great years being a Yankee. I had an All-Star year. I had a 30-30 year. It was great. Who doesn’t want to stay with a team that you’ve had such great times with and great years with? To see it maybe end here sucks, but it’s part of the business."

The previously mentioned Judge said following Wednesday's loss that he wants Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner and team senior vice president/general manager Brian Cashman to "go all-in and do what they need to do" to assemble a roster that can win the World Series in 2027. Barring a surprising development, part of that process will likely involve the Yankees parting ways with Chisholm.
