Commanders' Terry McLaurin suffers season-ending knee injury; here's how WR's absence impacts NFC East team's passing attack

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will be without one of his top targets for the rest of the season.

Late in the first quarter of a 23-17 road loss to the San Francisco 49ers on "Monday Night Football," wide receiver Terry McLaurin was carted off the field with a knee injury. On Tuesday, Washington head coach Dan Quinn revealed the WR tore the patellar tendon in his left knee and will miss the rest of the season.

"Man, I'm gutted for him," Quinn said while confirming he will soon undergo surgery, via The Athletic's David Aldridge.

How Terry McLaurin injury impacts Commanders offense

Losing McLaurin for the rest of the season hurts Washington. Entering Week 7, the two-time Pro Bowler leads the team in receiving yards (230 on 15 receptions). He has also been one of Daniels' favorite pass-catchers since Washington selected him with pick No. 2 in the 2024 NFL Draft. During this span, the eighth-year wideout has led the franchise in receiving yards (1,908 on 135 receptions) and touchdown catches (17).

The Commanders' receiving corps is deeper than in recent seasons. Washington signed former Buffalo Bills standout WR Stefon Diggs to a one-year, $8M deal in free agency, and the 12th-year veteran remains productive. Through five games, he has 24 receptions for 214 yards and four touchdown catches (tied for No. 6 in the NFL).

Rookie WR Antonio Williams (pick No. 71 of the 2026 NFL Draft), meanwhile, has been a solid Day 2 find. He ranks third on the team in receiving yards (205 on 18 receptions) and has one TD catch.

But neither Diggs nor Williams stretch the field vertically. Williams has averaged 11.4 yards per reception, while Diggs has averaged 8.9. McLaurin averaged 15.3 yards per reception.

A McLaurin-less passing attack reduces Daniels' deep-ball opportunities, and thus makes the Commanders even less dynamic. Entering Week 8, the NFC East squad ranks 23rd in the NFL in yards per pass (6.4).

Luckily, the Commanders rank 10th in yards per carry (4.6). They must lean on their ground game even more to compensate for a passing attack that may struggle to generate explosive plays without McLaurin. Washington (1-4-1) will have plenty of time to add more run plays to its offensive game plan during its bye week.
