Celtics’ trade for Paul George already paying huge dividends

Everyone around the NBA was stunned this summer when the Boston Celtics shipped forward All-NBA Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers to acquire forward Paul George.

The trade marked a significant shift from Boston’s longtime philosophy of building around its two stars, Brown and forward Jayson Tatum. George was viewed as one of the worst contracts in the league due to his growing injury history and athletic decline.

However, at least for one day, the trade is looking much better for the Celtics than anyone expected. George thrived next to Tatum and his playmaking, knocking down 7-of-12 three-point attempts and leading the team in scoring with 38 points on Tuesday.

Boston’s system, one that is predicated on floor spacing and perimeter shooting, was thought to be one that fit George’s skill set perfectly, and it’s looking that way so far. After a full summer of rest and recovery, he also looked to be quicker than last season, and it was much easier to dribble past his defender.

Boston did end up losing a 121-113 heartbreaker to the Detroit Pistons in which it led by 22 points, but it had little to do with George’s play. He was brought in to be more of a complimentary piece to Tatum, but he was the one leading the charge on opening day.

It’s only Game 1 of 82, and Brown has yet to play a regular-season game, but the trade doesn’t seem to be as disastrous for the Celtics as many fans and experts made it out to be. Boston just has a knack for putting together an extremely competitive roster no matter what happens.
