The Philadelphia 76ers traveled to play the New York Knicks on Tuesday night for each team’s season opener. It marked the first regular-season game including Philadelphia’s new-look starting lineup that now includes All-Star forwards Jaylen Brown and LeBron James.
The team spoke endlessly about how there would be an acclimation phase while everyone learns how to play together, but that wasn’t necessary against the Knicks. Although it wasn’t perfect, the 76ers managed to spoil the defending champions’ ring night with a 106-100 victory.
James didn’t join the team to be the leading scorer, so it’s no surprise he thrived in his role as a defender and playmaker, tallying a block and a steal apiece to go along with seven assists. He played a pivotal role in helping the 76ers knock off the Knicks, but he still wasn’t satisfied with his performance.
“I can be a lot better. Still getting my rhythm, obviously, just a little bit over two weeks with the squad, but I liked the way we played,” said James.
"Blessed to be able to play still at this level."

76ers head coach Nick Nurse wanted to see his team’s level of physicality in the opener, and he should be pleased with the results. James and Brown brought some bruising force that the team has lacked in the past, and it helped match the energy and effort that New York is notorious for.
There also didn’t seem to be much clunkiness on offense for a team just learning how to play with each other. So, it was a solid all-around performance, but James knows the team will need to continue improving to reach its ultimate goal of a championship.
There are still 81 more games to play, and potentially the playoffs, but it was a promising start for Philadelphia.
