The Detroit Red Wings are going to have to make the most out of what they’re working with. This, according to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun, who reports the organization has gone back to Dylan Larkin and his agent and asked that he expand his trade list again. The response was a refusal and the stance that they’ve been flexible enough. "Make it work" is the messaging.
LeBrun notes that his sources have revealed that interim GM Shawn Horcoff reached out to Dylan Larkin’s agents — Pat Brisson and Matt Williams — in the last few days to say, “I’ve tried everything with the 10 teams on your list, but I haven’t been able to find a trade that makes sense for us, the Detroit Red Wings. Please, would it be possible to add some other teams to the list?”
The response was a quick no.
“According to my sources, Pat Brisson’s response to the Red Wings — again, in the last few days — was 'no.' We’ve already given you 10 teams. You’re capable of making a trade with those ten teams.”
That means both the Montreal Canadiens and Buffalo Sabres, who are reportedly trying to get in on the trade, will have to keep waiting, assuming they aren’t totally out of luck.
Larkin has expanded his trade list from three teams to six, and now to 10. Elliotte Friedman noted that the list of 10 might change slightly, but it is expected that no more than 10 will be on it. LeBrun’s report suggests Larkin is done trying to work with the Red Wings. He says a third of the league is on his list. If you can’t make that work, it’s not me, it’s you.
Sources suggest that the Canadiens have significant interest in Larkin and are prepared to pitch an appealing offer. It might not matter if Larkin doesn’t add them to his list. According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, Habs GM Kent Hughes last checked in with Horcoff going into this past weekend.
This could be why Horcoff is reaching out to Larkin’s camp. If he’s got a deal in place, but one with a team that isn’t on Larkin’s list, the most he can do is ask. If Larkin continues to say no, that shows how badly he wants to stay out of that market.
The Minnesota Wild are said to have put an offer on the table that Horcoff doesn’t like. Detroit is looking to see if they can beat it. He feels they can get a better package, or something more to their liking. Larkin’s disinterest in expanding his list beyond 10 might force Horcoff to take less than he’d like.
