Lindsey Vonn’s quest for a fourth medal in the Winter Olympics came to a bitter end after an unfortunate turn of events. Competing in her first medal event at the 2026 Milan Cortina Olympics, the 41-year-old crashed barely 13 seconds into her run at the downhill final. Vonn was unable to get up and had to be airlifted to a nearby clinic.
She was later diagnosed with a fractured tibia in her left leg. The injury required multiple surgeries, and it ruled her out for the rest of the Olympics.
Vonn has since been recovering in a hospital in Italy. On Monday, the decorated skiing icon finally returned home to the United States.
Vonn entered her fifth Olympics with high hopes. The four-time Alpine Ski World Cup champion headed into the 2026 Games with one gold and two bronze medals in her collection. Vonn came out of retirement in 2024, six years after retiring in 2016. Her goal was to further expand her legacy in the 2026 Olympics.
Unfortunately for the Saint Paul, Minnesota native, her fifth Olympic stint did not go as planned. Her fractured leg from the downhill final is the latest addition to her long list of major career injuries.
Based on her social media updates, Vonn underwent at least four surgical procedures in Italy. On Saturday, after another round of surgery, she announced that she finally got the clearance to fly back home to America.
Vonn arrived in the U.S. on Monday night. She took to social media to announce her return.
“Haven’t stood on my feet in over a week… been in a hospital bed immobile since my race. And although I’m not yet able to stand, being back on home soil feels amazing ❤️ #imhome #BeLv
“Huge thank you to everyone in Italy for taking good care of me” she posted on X.

In a recent post, Vonn said she would provide “more updates and info about my injury” once she returns home to the United States. Vonn will likely consult with doctors and medical experts in the coming days to help her navigate through this latest injury.
At this point, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Vonn’s skiing career.
