Ange Postecoglou is clinging on to his job after a dismal domestic season that has seen Tottenham Hotspur eliminated from both domestic cups.
The North London club are languishing 14th in the Premier League table, and the pressure continues to grow on the Australian tactician. The only chance to salvage the season to some extent is by winning the Europa League, and even that might not save Ange Postecoglou.
Daniel Levy has not pulled the plug on the 59-year-old yet, with a permanent appointment now likely to wait until the end of the season in any case. Several managerial candidates have been linked with a move to White Hart Lane. If Daniel Levy decides to part ways with Postecoglou, Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola reportedly appears to be his primary target to take the hotseat. Fulham’s Marco Silva is considered Iraola’s alternative.
Now, former Spurs right-back Alan Hutton has named three managers he would like to see replace Ange should he be shown the door, including Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso. He agrees that Iraola should be a contender following his fantastic work at Bournemouth this season, while naming Xabi Alonso—albeit admitting the Bayer Leverkusen tactician would be unlikely to happen.
“It’s an interesting one. There’s no getting away from the fact that it’s not been good enough this season,” Alan Hutton exclusively told GIVEMESPORT on behalf of Betway.
“They’re sitting in 14th in the league. They’ve still got the Europa League that they’re going for, but just in terms of where they should be as a club, they should be sitting in a better situation.
“So, the spotlight will be on him, and you could see at the Fulham game that some of the fans were jumping down his throat a little bit.
“It’s not a subject I like talking about, but I understand how football works, so where they finish and their run to the end of the season will probably dictate whether he holds onto his job or not.
“But if he was to go, the likes of Andoni Iraola and Thomas Frank have to be in contention. Xabi Alonso is one that would probably never happen, but he’s somebody who could come in and do a great job, as he’s shown at Bayer Leverkusen.
“There are options out there, it’s just whether they can attract these sorts of guys, but first and foremost, Ange will want to hold onto his position beyond the current season.”
One of Europe’s best young tactical minds, following his achievements at Bayer Leverkusen, where he became the first manager to lead an invincible campaign in the Bundesliga, Alonso deserves all the recognition he’s been getting. The Spaniard led Leverkusen to a 51-game unbeaten run that eventually came to an end in the Europa League final against Atalanta at the end of last season.
He would undoubtedly be an incredible appointment for Spurs, bringing fresh tactics and ideas to a squad that needs to lift spirits after a disastrous season. For starters, fans would be excited if it happened, and he would likely get a tune out of the playing squad that has severely underperformed, given his rich success at Bay Arena in the Bundesliga.
However, signing Alonso would be an uphill task for Levy and Co. as he is one of the most likely candidates to eventually replace the legendary Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid when he departs.
