Andre Onana officially wins first trophy with Trabzonspor

Andre Onana has won his first trophy since leaving Manchester United on loan to Turkish giants Trabzonspor last summer.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed the loan move, re-finding much-needed minutes, leading club president Ertugrul Dogan to declare, ‘We want him to stay.’ And since that statement was made, Onana has now experienced his first real piece of success at the club.

Trabzonspor overcame Konyaspor in their Turkish Cup final on Friday night, with Andre Onana’s side winning 2-1.

Onana made three important saves on the night, and at the other end, former Southampton striker Paul Onuachu did the business and netted twice.

It’s a game that marked Onana’s last on loan at Trabzonspor, in a season that has been good for him personally in finding regular minutes.

Onana has faced 34.75 xGOT in the Turkish Süper Lig IN 2025/26, conceding 34 goals. That leaves him with a goals prevented of 0.75 – but not a huge improvement from last season at Manchester United.

The Cameroonian started 34 of 28 Premier League games last season, conceding 44 goals. But Onana faced a similar xGOT of 44.53. This season’s shot-stopping has only been a slight statistical improvement for him.

But Onana made three errors leading to goals for United in 2024/25, compared to just once for Trabzonspor in 2025/26. A decent improvement there, but in a less intense league, it comes as no huge shock. So what next?

Onana’s £120,000-a-week salary would make it difficult to put him on the bench at Manchester United as a backup goalkeeper, so a move away sounds the most likely option this summer. Trabzonspor have confirmed they will be suitors.

The 30-year-old will likely rejoin pre-season training at United; however unlikely it is that he ends up as the club’s number one by mid-August when the Premier League commences.

If Trabzonspor can agree on terms, a permanent move would be best for The Red Devils, but there are no guarantees as it stands.
