Manchester United’s transfer plans this summer are expected to revolve around careful spending to strengthen Michael Carrick’s squad ahead of another demanding campaign.
Financial flexibility remains important at Old Trafford, especially with several major targets being monitored across Europe.
But not every potential cash injection will come from current squad departures.
Mason Greenwood, whose future at Olympique de Marseille is becoming increasingly uncertain despite an outstanding individual season in France.
The forward has rebuilt his reputation on the pitch during the 2025/26 campaign, finishing with 26 goals and 11 assists across all competitions while earning a place in the Ligue 1 Team of the Season.
His performances have reportedly attracted attention from several top European clubs, including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Juventus.
However, it is AS Roma who currently appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Roma have already made contact with Greenwood’s father as they look to position themselves strongly in negotiations, with the player believed to be interested in the club’s long-term project according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Greenwood’s potential departure comes after Marseille failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, a setback that has reportedly increased pressure on the French side’s finances despite the player previously expressing a desire to remain at the Stade Velodrome.
The former Manchester United academy graduate only joined Marseille permanently in 2024 in a deal worth around £26.6 million after United decided he could not continue at Old Trafford.
But crucially for the Premier League side, United are believed to have inserted a significant sell-on clause into the agreement.
That clause could reportedly see Manchester United receive up to 50% of any future transfer fee involving Mason Greenwood, a detail that now makes his next move particularly relevant for the club’s summer finances.
Marseille are understood to value the striker at around £43 million, even though he remains under contract until 2029.
If a transfer happens close to that valuation, United could receive a substantial payout without directly negotiating the deal themselves.
Roma may believe they hold an advantage due to their strong relationship with Marseille, although competition remains active elsewhere.
Reports from Turkey have also claimed that Fenerbahce presidential candidate Hakan Safi wants Greenwood to become a marquee signing as part of plans to reshape the Turkish club’s future.
Greenwood’s Old Trafford career may be over, but his next decision could still play an important role in helping fund Manchester United’s rebuild ahead of the new season.
