The failed transfer of Ederson to Manchester United has prompted Atalanta to publicly address the collapse for the first time after weeks of speculation surrounding the Brazilian midfielder.

The 27-year-old appeared destined for Old Trafford after United reached an agreement with the Serie A club earlier this summer.

However, the move unexpectedly broke down despite advanced negotiations, with reports suggesting concerns over the midfielder’s fitness played a significant role.

Earlier reports claimed United decided against completing the transfer after concerns emerged over Ederson’s right knee, although speculation also suggested the club had simply changed direction in the market.

Since then, Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea and are also expected to confirm the arrival of Aston Villa star Youri Tielemans.

Atalanta director addresses Ederson transfer collapse

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, Atalanta director Cristiano Giuntoli admitted the Italian club did not expect Manchester United to walk away from the deal.

“We were stunned [by Man United calling Ederson deal off],” Giuntoli said.

The comments underline Atalanta’s surprise after negotiations had progressed to an advanced stage before the transfer ultimately collapsed.

Despite the disappointment, the Serie A side are already planning for Ederson’s long-term future.

Giuntoli confirmed that the club have begun working on a new contract for the Brazilian midfielder following the failed move to Old Trafford.

“Now we are working on a new contract for him,” the Atalanta director added.

The update suggests the club are keen to reward Ederson and secure his future after interest from one of the Premier League’s biggest clubs.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have moved quickly to strengthen Michael Carrick’s midfield by bringing in Santos, while Tielemans is expected to become the club’s latest addition after completing the final stages of his transfer.

Unless another club revives interest later this summer, Ederson now appears set to remain in Bergamo as Atalanta look to tie one of their key players down to fresh terms.
