Fraser Forster made some critical saves to help Tottenham earn a point vs Rangers

Tottenham Hotspur failed to end their four-game winless run across all competitions as they drew 1-1 with Rangers away in the Europa League on Thursday.

Philippe Clement’s side caused Spurs many problems throughout the game. They deservedly took the lead just minutes after the break through Hamza Igamane, who slammed James Tavernier’s cross past Fraser Forster.

The North Londoners struggled until Ange Postecoglou made substitutions which helped swing the game back in their favour. Dejan Kulusevski scored the equaliser, driving home from just outside the box after good work from fellow substitute Dominic Solanke and James Maddison to open up Rangers’ defence.

The Greek-Australian tactician was far from impressed by his side’s display at the Ibrox, but he should be pleased with the performance of Fraser Forster in this crucial European tie.

Forster has arguably been Spurs’ player best since Guglielmo Vicario underwent ankle surgery last month. Him being counted among the best performers speaks volumes about the situation Big Ange’s side find themselves in. However, the reality cannot be ignored and the ex-England international has consistently delivered the goods in recent weeks.

The 36-year-old proved himself a worthy deputy to the injured Vicario once again as he made several key saves, mostly notably denying Rangers a certain late winner by keeping out Cyriel Dessers from close range, deflecting a shot that looked destined to hit the back of the net.

It was more of Dessers failing to convert from close range to break the hearts of the travelling Tottenham supporters, but one cannot take anything away from Forster’s cat-like reflexes that helped his team hold onto a vital point.

Former Scotland forward James McFadden was effusive in his praise for Forster. He felt Spurs should thank the veteran shot-stopper for not tasting a defeat at Rangers.

“Fraser Forster made a couple of outstanding saves for them. Thankfully for them, they had him in the goal because it could’ve been a defeat for them,” James McFadden was quoted by BBC Sport.

It was another solid display from Forster in goal as he continued to shush the naysayers. There have also been sections of the fanbase who doubted him and continue to doubt him, but the Englishman has shown that there is still life in the old dog and he can be relied upon.

With crucial games coming up, Big Ange would be expecting Fraser to continue performing and producing big moments in games to help Tottenham win points.
