Carlisle United are entering another important reset period after a season that ultimately ended in play-off heartbreak, despite signs of progress in the campaign overall.

The club had been pushing for a return to the Football League but fell short at the semi-final stage against Boreham Wood, leaving ambitions unfulfilled once again.

It followed a campaign of transition, with the squad undergoing changes and expectations gradually rising as the season developed.

There was still a sense, internally, that stability could have carried them closer to their target.

It has now been confirmed that Mark Hughes has left his role as manager by mutual consent, bringing an end to his spell at Brunton Park after being appointed in February 2025.

The former Manchester United forward was brought in with the clear brief of guiding Carlisle back into the EFL, but after missing out on promotion, both sides agreed to move in a different direction.

His departure closes a short but eventful chapter that began with hopes of immediate recovery but ended in disappointment.

Mark Hughes replaced by Rob Elliot

Carlisle have moved quickly to reshape the dugout, turning to a familiar face in Rob Elliot as their new head coach, as the club announced on their website.

The 40-year-old arrives on a rolling contract after previously impressing in short spells of leadership, including a strong spell at Gateshead where he helped deliver FA Trophy success in 2024.

His return to management has been viewed as an opportunity to build on recent momentum within the club.

A club statement confirmed: “Former Premier League goalkeeper with Newcastle United and Republic of Ireland international, Rob, now arrives at Carlisle with a clear identity and strong ideas on how he wants his teams to play.

“The club believes this is the right time to move forward with someone who can build on the progress made last season, bring added drive and intensity, and develop a tactically flexible, front-foot, attacking team that plays with purpose, creates chances and connects with supporters.”

Carlisle now begin a new chapter under Elliot, with expectations that his fresh approach can finally turn their promotion ambitions into reality.
