Champions League Final Humiliation Vs PSG Seals 1966-67 Style ‘Annus Horribilis’ For Inzaghi’s Inter Milan

A crushing defeat to PSG in the Champions League has sealed an “annus horribilis” for Simone Inzaghi and Inter Milan.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Turin-based newspaper Tuttosport, via FCInterNews.

Inter Milan had high hopes coming into the final stretch of the season.

In mid-April, the Nerazzurri were in the Champions League semifinals, leading in the Serie A table, and playing for a place in the Coppa Italia.

But over the last five or so weeks, absolutely all of that has come to a crashing end.

Simone Inzaghi had guided his Inter into a strong position towards the end of the campaign.

But after consecutive losses to Bologna, AC Milan, and Roma, the cracks had really become evident.

That did not stop Inter from knocking Barcelona out of the Champions League in extremely dramatic fashion.

However, that evidently was only delaying the inevitable.

From the midfield to the 3-5-2 shape to the seemingly ageless form of Francesco Acerbi, everything was exposed ruthlessly by Paris Saint-Germain yesterday.

And this has left Inter without a trophy to show for whatever positives they had earlier in the campaign.

This is not dissimilar to the 1966-67 campaign of the “Grande Inter” team. That side had narrowly finished second to Juventus in the Serie A title race, and then lost to Celtic in the European Cup final.

All the hard work over the course of the season just seemed to go down the drain.
