Over the weekend, Chelsea pulled off a major upset when they demolished reigning Champions League holders Paris Saint-Germain. The win saw them lift their second trophy since the takeover by Clearlake Capital and become the first team to win the new-look Club World Cup. With this victory, they also managed to surpass a surprising milestone.

Chelsea Pass Manchester City for Huge Achievement

Winningest Club From England

As of now, the Blues are leading the way having passed Manchester City to sit atop the rankings. According to The Athletic, Enzo Maresca oversaw the club’s 21st major title win of this century. This puts them one ahead of the Cityzens who have 20 to their name. Manchester United and Liverpool trail behind with 18 and 17, respectively.

Rounding out the top five by quite a distance is Arsenal who have just 9 since the turn of the century. This ranking is a gread indication of how strong the side has been under Roman Abramovich and now Clearlake Capital, managing to sustain their winning nature while other teams have had tumultuous ups and downs.

How Did We Get Here

Despite going through a bit of a drought after Abramovich was forced to sell, Chelsea have found their footing and captured the Europa Conference League and Club World Cup in recent weeks. This bridged the gap to the top spot which had been taken over by the dominant City side who hoovered up silverware in the late 10s and early 20s.

The majority of the Blues’ title wins for this list of course came in that first decade after the takeover. From the moment Jose Mourinho came in the door until he eventually returned for a second stint, the club won it all, including multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, a Champions League, and even a Europa League.

While some fans may be unhappy to see who sits atop the ranking as the most trophy-laden team in England, it feels right that it’s a Chelsea team who have won it all. Not only are they the only club to complete the set of UEFA club competitions but they’ve captured every major title in England and won both versions of the Club World Cup.
